HONORS FOUNDATIONS OF SCIENCE

5 CREDITS

0416-H

GRADE 9

Students develop a firm understanding of basic principles of chemistry and physics with a strong emphasis on laboratory investigations. Critical thinking, keeping a lab notebook, analysis and presentation of data and technique for preparation of lab reports enhance the student’s research skills. In April students begin the search for a topic for a ten-month research project. Students are guided through the topic selection, literature search, and preparation and execution of the experimental design, which is done during the summer.

PREREQUISITE: Placement is determined by the HSPT test, previous grades, and/or qualifying test.

FOUNDATIONS OF SCIENCE - CP LEVEL

5 CREDITS

0415 - CP

GRADE 9

This lecture/lab course maintains an emphasis on physical science while integrating physics and chemistry. Technological skills using graphing calculators and scientific probes, as well as lecture, demonstrations, and interactive on-line activities, form a solid foundation for future science courses.

PREREQUISITE: Placement is determined by the HSPT test, previous grades, and/or qualifying test.

GRADE 10

This lecture/lab course focuses on principles of classification, cladistics, cell structure and function, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, biochemistry of nucleic acids, genetics and evolution, and the structure and function of plant, invertebrate and vertebrate systems. Students develop a research project through experimental design and data collection, statistical analysis of data and step-by-step writing of a scientific paper.

PREREQUISITES: Current science teacher's approval and Departmental Approval; freshman science and math H - 90; freshman science and math CP-95. Commitment to the research project is required.

BIOLOGY

5 CREDITS

0422 - CP

GRADE 10

This lecture/lab course includes the study of biochemistry, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, cell structure and function, genetics, evolutionary theory, plants and classification of the organisms in the six Kingdoms.

PREREQUISITE: Current science teacher's approval; freshman science and freshman math CP 75 or above..

ESSENTIALS OF BIOLOGY

5 CREDITS

0424 - B

GRADE 10

This lecture/lab course emphasizes the unity in the diversity of life. The major life processes are discussed using examples from the six Kingdoms with particular apention to humans. This course does not satisfy prerequisites for Honors Anatomy and Physiology

HONORS CHEMISTRY

5 CREDITS

0433 - H

GRADE 11

This lecture/lab course extends the student’s understanding of stoichiometry, thermochemistry, correlation of electronic structure and chemical properties, and characteristics of gases, liquids and solids.

PREREQUISITE: Current science teacher's approval and Departmental approval; 2 years of mathematics including Algebra (H-90; CP- 95) and Geometry (H-90; CP-95) and Biology (H-90; CP-95); Algebra 2 or Algebra2/Trig must be completed or taken concurrently.

CHEMISTRY

5 CREDITS

0432 - CP

GRADE 11

This lecture/lab course establishes a working mastery of chemical terms and techniques for use in the study of atomic structure, bonding, states of maper and reactivity, and gas laws. Knowledge of basic algebraic operations, decimals, and proportion is necessary for chemical calculations.

PREREQUISITE: Current science teacher's approval, Biology (H or CP -80), Algebra 1 and Geometry (80); Algebra 2 or Algebra 2/Trig must be concurrent.

CONCEPTUAL CHEMISTRY

5 CREDITS

0465 - CP

GRADE 11

This course is designed to extend chemistry concepts learned in Foundations of Science through the use of laboratory work and demonstrations, technology and activities. This course does not satisfy the requirements for the honors science courses offered in Grade 12.

AP CHEMISTRY

5 CREDITS

0435 - AP

GRADE 12

This second year course is aimed at increasing student mastery of chemistry and preparing them for the AP exam. Topics covered in the previous course (atomic structure, bonding, states of maper, stoichiometry and chemical reactions) will be expanded and new topics will be introduced (physical, organic, polymer and experiential chemistry). Students will move beyond mastery of basic principles to the use of knowledge to make predictions of chemical behavior.

HONORS PHYSICS

5 CREDITS

0443 - H

GRADE 12

Through lecture, extensive laboratory work and high level problem solving, students develop a working knowledge of Newtonian mechanics, energy, waves and thermodynamics. During the second semester, students apply their skills to a bridge design project. A summer assignment is required.

PREREQUISITE: Current science teacher's approval; Chemistry H and Algebra 2/Trig -90; Precalculus or Calculus must be taken concurrently.

PHYSICS

5 CREDITS

0442 - CP

GRADE 12

Through lectures, discussions, lab work, and problem solving sessions, the student will be introduced to vectors, motion, forces, universal gravity, conservation laws, thermodynamics, wave motion, light and electricity, and magnetism. Current topics in physics will be addressed. Critical thinking and analytical and problem solving skills will be emphasized.

PREREQUISITE: Current science teacher's approval, CP Chemistry and Algebra 2 -85; H Chemistry and Algebra 2/Trig -80; CP Trig/Intro to Precalculus or Precalculus must be taken concurrently.
