This is a multi-skilled program designed to develop in an interdependent approach, the four basic language skills -- listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to simultaneously reinforce each skill. The program is student-centered requiring the active participation of the student in cooperation with the varied methods of instruction. Two major objectives of this course are individual proficiency in the communication of the target language and the development of positive attitudes toward the target language culture.

The second level continues the objectives of level one-- the individual proficiency of the language, by using the same multi-skills approach to a simultaneous, but increasingly more detailed development of the four basic language skills. As in level one the culture is woven into the daily instruction. Two major objectives of this course remain the individual proficiency in the communication of the target language and the development of positive attitudes toward the target language culture.
PREREQUISITE: Level 1 course or its equivalent.

This course is offered to students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in the skills developed in level one. In addition to the content and objectives described in level 2CP, added emphasis will be placed on understanding and applying more complex structures. The class will be conducted primarily in the target language.
PREREQUISITE: At least a 93 average in level one, teacher recommendation, and proficiency test.

This course is offered to students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in skills developed in Levels I and II. In addition to the content and objectives described in Level 3CP, added emphasis will be placed on the application of advanced structure, with special attention to the development of accurate writing skills. The class will be conducted in the target language.
PREREQUISITE: An average of 85 in Level 2H / 93 in Level 2 CP and Teacher recommendation.

The aim of this course is to reinforce structure acquired in the first and second levels and to expand vocabulary through practical implementation of acquired skills and audio-visual materials. This practical implementation includes improving listening comprehension, pronunciation and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on equipping the student with the ability to understand and to speak the target language within the framework of the student's structure and vocabulary levels. Special attention is given to enhance the vocabulary necessary for formal and informal writing and conversational situations in cultural contexts.
PREREQUISITE: Sophomores/Juniors - an average of 80 in Level 2 and Teacher Recommendation; Freshmen - Completion of Level 2 course.

The aims of this course are the further development of the student's language skills in preparation for higher study and the cultural growth of the individual student. The student is encouraged and guided to read and to discuss the history, literature, art, and contemporary culture of the target language, while continuing with a study of more advanced structure and vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on equipping the student to make practical use of the four years of language study. The class will be conducted in the target language.
PREREQUISITE: An average of 85 in Level 3H / 93 in level 3CP and Teacher recommendation. Summer Assignment is required.

This course continues the objectives described in Level 3CP with an emphasis on specific vocabulary, reading, culture, history, art, and geography that will be used to introduce the students to the various genres and authors of literature. The class will be conducted in the target language. In the event there are too few requesting this level, other scheduling accommodations may be made.
PREREQUISITE: An average of 85 in Level 3 and Teacher Recommendation.

The purpose of this course is to give the advanced student the opportunity to experience a college leevel course while perfecting the use of thee target language through the study of history, literature and film. This class is conducted entirely in the target language. Students are expected to demonstrate a good command of the language through reading of novels, essay writing, oral discussions on various topics including current isues. Students in this course are given the preparation to tale the National AP language exam. In the event there are too few requesting this level, other scheduling recommendations may be made.
PREREQUISITE: An average of 85 in Level 4H / 93 in Level 4CP, and Teacher recommendation. Summer Assignment is required.

This course is designed as an introduction to the study of Italian, as well as an exposure to the land, people, and customs of Italy. Emphasis is placed on active student participation to acquire conversational skills through listening, speaking, and reading in preparation for world travel and expansion of greater cultural understanding.
