Spartan of the Year Award

YEAR AWARDLani and Dan Diemicke of Branchburg were named Immaculata’s 2018 Spartans of the Year, a prestigious award, established in 1968 to recognize individuals, who through hard work have humbly served the greater good of the Spartan community. It is the first time that the school has honored a couple for this award. The Diemicke’s son, Adam, graduated from Immaculata in 2014.

A number of years ago, Lani and Dan Diemicke volunteered to help with bikes at the school’s Annual Campus Ministry fundraiser. That evolved into a "bike ministry,” in which the couple made connections with bike shops and garage sales, acquiring bikes that needed work. Dan’s job was to rehabilitate the look of the bikes, while Lani mastered the art of fixing them. As a result, their home was the storehouse of so many bikes that Campus Ministry instituted a Fall Bike Sale, as well as the Annual Garage Sale Bike Program. All Campus Ministry fundraisers help to finance the school’s extensive outreach program and scholarships for the weekend retreats.

Yet Lani and Dan’s contributions to Immaculata were more far reaching than that. Their combined efforts include chairing the Super 50/50 raffle, volunteering for the Wine Tasting Event basket auction, Patriot Stadium Concession Stand, back to school refreshments, Craft Show parking, Fashion Show 50/50, Pasta Dinner dishwashing, and serving as escorts with students visiting nursing homes with pets, as well as chaperones for band and choir trips. The couple also has made donations to the on-site convent for the IHM Sisters.

Lani and Dan Diemicke epitomize the spirit of the Spartan of The Year Award. With their boundless energy, they do whatever is needed to help Immaculata and its students. The couple was so touched by the honor. "Lani and I saw how much Adam was benefiting from IHS, and we were determined to give back wherever possible. Our volunteering for IHS can best be described by Saint Frances of Assisi, who said, ‘Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.’”

Congratulations to Lani and Dan; you join a stellar group of honored volunteers over the past six decades.

Always working, Lani and Dan ask if anyone has a bike to donate, email lanilovesbikes@gmail.com.
