Team 1279 Cold Fusion delivered an impressive performance at its first robotics competition of the season, overcoming early setbacks to finish third overall.
Qualification matches on Saturday presented several challenges, including a snapped intake tube and a burned-out kicker motor. Despite the mechanical issues, the team adapted quickly by rebuilding parts and adjusting strategy. Instead of focusing on scoring, the robot shifted to a support role by feeding balls to alliance partners and playing strong defense. After the qualification rounds, Cold Fusion finished with a 3–9 record and ranked 26th out of 30 teams.

The team’s performance caught the attention of higher-ranked competitors and Cold Fusion was selected by the second-seeded alliance, joining Team 5895 (Peddie Robotics) and Team 1676 (The Pascack Pi-oneers) for the playoff rounds.
The alliance advanced through the first two playoff matches with convincing victories before facing the top-ranked alliance in a close battle that ended in a 235–260 loss. A final elimination match determined whether the alliance would advance to the championship round, but a mechanical failure from one alliance partner during the match created a difficult two-versus-three situation. Despite the effort, the match ended in a 96–108 defeat, securing a third-place finish for the alliance.
The result was especially impressive considering the team faced uncertainty about having a fully functional robot just days before the competition. Determination, quick problem-solving, and teamwork allowed Cold Fusion to compete with some of the strongest teams in the event.
Following the competition, Cold Fusion sits with 23 District Ranking Points, currently 37th out of 143 teams in the Mid-Atlantic District. With 66 teams qualifying for the FMA Championships, the team remains in a strong position heading into its next competition at Mount Olive.

The season is just getting started, but Cold Fusion has already shown it can compete with the best.
