Mission Possible

Spartan Nation flexed its volunteer muscles during the launch of Mission Possible. This was a replacement event for summer Appalachia, the annual ministry that was canceled by the pandemic—the first ever cancellation in the work camp’s thirty-plus year history.

In this new day-camp style service program, volunteers were divided into teams and served at several project sites over the course of five days, which benefited many local charitable organizations. These projects included:

  • Working at Project Earth Garden in Califon, NJ,
  • Building a porch for a local homeless shelter,
  • Creating a prayer chain,
  • Working on the grounds of Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ,
  • Creating fresh meals for the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP) in Somerville, NJ,
  • Planting and mulching gardens for the four group homes of Arc of Somerset County,
  • Gathering furniture to donate to Yellow Tag in Green Brook, and,
  • Donating hot food to Agape House in Somerville, NJ,

Precautions were taken to ensure the safety of volunteers and those they served, like daily temperature checks, the wearing of masks, and social distancing.

All of this was done through the generous support of our Immaculata community, with funds and energy that would have otherwise gone towards the summer Appalachia program. Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, our Spartan family still found a way to safely provide service to those in need and make a difference!
