Joe Louis

For Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month, US History II classes will be doing short lessons on different people. The first lesson, The Joe Louis Reliford story, is about a 12-year-old batboy who is the youngest person to play professional baseball and also the first Black person to play. Joe Louis Reliford broke the race barrier in 1952 and you could say he also broke the age barrier. Today as you enter his hometown, Douglas Georgia, you will see a sign, Home of Joe Reliford, Youngest Professional Baseball Player, represented in Baseball Hall of Fame, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and the Guinness Book of World records. Students will be encouraged to find similar stories of people that made a difference we will share them at the end of the month.
