World War II Poster Essays

Head of School Ms. Silo made a surprise visit to US History II Honors class. The students working in small groups were working on creating a ‘poster essay’ for a unique, obscure, or unknown event or unlikely person involved in World War II. None of the events changed the outcome of the war, but students learned that Dr. Seuss, Heddy Lamar, Walt Disney, Ian Fleming, Ted Williams, Bob Hope and many other old time celebrities, writers, cartoonists all were part of the effort to defeat the Nazis and Imperial Japan. Students were surprised to learn James Bond was created from Ian Fleming’s experiences as a spy during the war, and that Seuss and Disney created training films and propaganda films, many of which are so politically incorrect that they are no longer shown but can be found on YouTube. The three day project will cumulate with short presentations. Hopefully Ms. Silo can come back and watch them.
