Members of the class of 2022 volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. It was so nice to see our four super servers from Coffee ‘N Chat last year (pictured together with the signed tree slice) take that next step up from level 4 (during-school) service all the way to the top, level 1 service (social justice, giving the poor a hand up rather a hand out). This is exactly why we built the 5-level service program at Immaculata in 2019—to offer to the students a gradual entry into volunteering and all the gifts it offers. The Livingston, NJ site supervisor was the perfect teacher because he challenged us toward the edge of our comfort zones and then showed us how safe and easy it was to cross to the other side. We had hands-on instruction with really complex heavy tools, how to safely remove a tall dangerous tree, and how to lay wooden flooring—what a perfect day. The future homeowner was at the site and worked with us side by side all day as part of Habitat’s “sweat equity” policy.

Thank you Habitat for Humanity for lessons we’ll keep with us for life, because a heart once stretched can never return to its original dimensions!
