Beginning their senior year, five students of the Immaculata High School Class of 2023 were named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The students – Aidan Cannatelli, of Hillsborough; Marissa Mellyn, of Somerset; Daniel O’Connor, of Branchburg; Lilliel Shun, of Edison; and Ainsley Zohn, of Warren – are among 34,000 students, estimated to be in the top 3-4% of PSAT test takers, nationwide to be recognized with the distinction.

According to Kimberly Greiner, executive director of scholarship administration for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, “Commended Students are being recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry,” which was administered last October. “Participants who scored at or above the Commended Student Selection Index score, but below their state or selection unit’s Semifinalist Selection Index score, are Commended Students.”

They will be awarded a Letter of Commendation, signed by both Immaculata High School principal Edward Webber and the president of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, during the school’s student leadership installation on Sept. 30.

“We extend our congratulations and are certainly proud of these students and all they have achieved academically, but what makes their distinction as Commended Students even more impressive is their ability to excel in research and academics, while at the same time balancing their successes outside the classroom,” said Webber. “These students are exemplary models of the whole of our student body, which is only strengthened by our students’ well-roundedness and their ability to achieve all they set their minds to, whether that be renewed faith, exceptional scholarship, compassionate service, or the building of lasting friendships. It is with these skills that our students will continue to experience success that lasts well beyond their academic careers.”

Immaculata High School, a co-ed college preparatory high school, and Immaculate Conception School, serving students in pre-K through 8th grade, both parochial schools in Somerville, are still enrolling for the fall. For more information, visit: immaculatahighschool.org or immaculateconception.org.
