Young future health care providers in the Health Science Career Education program at IHS, partnered with Rutgers University, hit the floor, desk, and ground running with ideas on how they can collaborate and build the tallest tower in a certain time frame. They were given the materials of marshmallows, uncooked spaghetti, and scotch tape. Instructions were not included. They experienced all the trials and errors as they went along their “planned route.” They realized that ideas and suggestions came as they were building. Effective communication skills, understanding, patience, cooperation, and perseverance were the necessary components. The winning tower was measured at 52 inches. These future doctors, nurses, therapists, etc enjoyed the activity very much. They also realized you have to be an effective listener as well because everyone had ideas, suggestions, and a good sense of humor to make this a success.
