Child Labor

The students enrolled in the US History 2 AP course recently completed a child labor photo analysis project. The students researched the photographs of Lewis Hine, a photographer working for the National Child labor committee during the early 1900s. Child labor persisted in the united States mainly from the 1870s to the early 1920s.

The Immaculata students responded by writing about the suffering endured by American children who worked on dangerous jobs in mines, factories, farms etc… rather than going to school or enjoying just growing up.

The students found the project to be an awakening to a terrible problem that took place for many years. Luckily, child labor was outlawed by 1938.

The class is taught by Mr. Joseph Servedio, and he has assigned the project for 19 years, giving the students the understanding of reforms that were needed at the turn of the century. Thankfully, the students today can appreciate living without the burden of dangerous child labor.
