Julia Greeley

US History II students discussed Julia Greeley. Greeley spent her early life in Missouri in slavery and spent her later life serving the poor and destitute of Denver. Today her cause for Sainthood has advanced to Servant of God. Greeley was blind in one eye, the result of a whip across her face by her slave owner. Once she acquired her freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation she worked as a nanny. The family she lived with moved to Denver taking her with them. She earned a meager 12 dollars a month spending all of it on those in great need. She begged for money and goods for those suffering poverty, for example baby carriages, mattresses, and other necessities. Students were impressed that someone who had faced such hardships could be so generous and caring of others. Greeley is an example for all of us today.
