NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
2018 Golf Mackie Award Recipient
"Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they have the heart." That's an inspirational quote by Elizabeth Andrews, which captures the spirit of Immaculata High School's Annual Mackie Award, given out each year at the Golf Classic, held this year on Monday, June 4, 2018 at Copper Hills Country Club in Ringoes.
Tony Petto, of Hillsborough, is this year's winner of the Mackie Award, which started in 2008. Over the past decade, the award has been given to an Immaculata volunteer, who often keeps donating time to the school, long after his/her children graduate. Their commitment to the school reflects the spirit of the late J. Brandon (Mackie) Maxwell, the award's first recipient and for whom the award was named.
Mackie was a huge supporter of all aspects of Immaculata, but his impact was most felt in Athletics, where he ran the football concession stands for years and was one of the main architects of the school's universal gym.
Petto's commitment to Immaculata is spread across several areas: the music department, campus ministry, and office of advancement. His daughter, Kate, graduated in 2010, but that has not stopped Tony from his all-out involvement.
According to Ed Webber'99, Director of Music, "Working as a 'Band Dad,' Tony helped us by driving the truck and loading equipment, when we went to games, competitions, and even Florida. He has also served as a carpenter and adult mentor for the stage crew for the past 12 years. We are so grateful for his support, dedication and generosity over the years. He is a true Spartan."
Reacting to the award announcement, Tony stated, "I'm humbled to be receiving this award. I really prefer to work quietly in the background. This school, the entire Immaculata family, is so special to me and my family. From Msgr. Seamus Brennan to Mrs. Jean Kline and the entire faculty, thank you for your commitment to our children. My daughter benefited greatly from her time at Immaculata, and for this I will be forever grateful."
In addition, Petto is a major asset to the annual Garage Sale, run by the school's campus ministry and is a behind-the-scenes organizer for the Office of Advancement's Golf Classic.
