Immaculata seniors, Tim Albano and Deonna Powell, who represented our school, were recently honored at the State House for the school’s efforts in demonstrating how “Catholic Schools Care for God’s Planet.” They were recognized by the NJ Network of Catholic School Families in acknowledgement of their outstanding achievements conveying Catholic Schools as communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service. Our school’s video presentation showcased the work of the Spartan Soil Connection and was produced by Immaculata’s Digital Art students under the direction of their teacher, Joe DeVito.

Tim’s dedication inspired the new program called AP Level Composting, which challenges students to encourage a parish that hosts a holiday meal to save the vegetable peelings for our compost garden; Tim brought in 25 gallons last year and 20 gallons this year to date.

Tim and his peers inspired another feeder program, FUNDraking, by raking some lawns—bringing in the much-needed leaves for the compost garden—and donating the proceeds to impoverished families in Appalachia. Deonna has chopped produce scraps, worked in the garden, bagged compost for sale, donated produce scraps and most recently began bringing in 5-gallon pails of tea leaves from a company she works for.

Our Spartan Soil Connection students live Catholic Social Teaching to the fullest by not only directly responding to immediate needs but also through inspiring others to strive for earth-saving lifestyle changes.

SPARTAN PROUD!
