The Immaculata food shopping program, which has existed for 20 years through Campus Ministry, is purposefully designed to be easy. Given names by local Catholic charities, the students with a Campus Ministry supervisor each shop for one person who orders under 11 items.
This program is typically a gateway service event for after-school off-campus volunteer programs, because of its simplicity, close proximity & ability to perform it in under an hour, which is why it attracts plenty of freshmen. The hope is that the students see how fun, social & simple community service can be. The senior citizens love it, because it helps them purchase needed groceries and they get to interact with our students.
Other Campus Ministry programs that serve the elderly include: Bring Your Pet Day, Word Scramble at Care One, Handihelp via simple chores in one's home & the trendy latest, Get Smart Phoned, where we help seniors navigate the technical hurdles of today's cell phones.
Our students are living the Pillar of Service through an array of programs, helping the elderly, marginalized, the poor, disadvantaged, and the ill. In addition, the program has expanded to include many environmentally related projects.
